As a stewardship forest and longleaf pine restoration project, we are dedicated to using best forest management practices. It may seem that burning the forest is the opposite of good practice but contrary to popular belief many plant species rely on regular burns to thrive. By burning the understory of a pine forest, native grasses, pitcher plants, flowers, and baby pine trees gain access to the light they need to grow. This also allows for animals such as the Gopher tortoise to move freely and build tunnels underground that provide habitat and protection for a large number of other animals.
